PhotoHunt: Red

Due to Internet issues, I usually post on Friday after work rather than Saturday so it took me a little while to realize the PhotoHunt assignment for this week would be dated Dec. 1, which is also World AIDS Day. I don’t know if it is done this way anymore, but years ago the artistic community marked World AIDS Day with “A Day Without Art.”

In that spirit, I offer my take on the PhotoHunt theme: a red wristband for Blood:Water Mission (a wonderful organization working in Africa) wrapped around a small figurine that is symbolically covered with white tissue paper to represent a day without art … as I look forward to a day without AIDS.

How to spend 40 downloads #4

This month’s download is simple. Go here and download the amazing, wonderful Songs for Christmas by Sufjan Stevens. It’s quirky, as you would expect from Sufjan. It’s beautiful, as you would expect from Sufjan. If you manage to listen to it and not find yourself singing some of the songs later, it would truly be a Christmas surprise.

Wednesday Worship Thoughts: The Advent Journey #1

For the first step in our Advent journey, we start with a hymn dating back hundreds of years, O Come, O Come Emmanuel. Though obviously written after the birth of Christ, its minor key and the melancholy sound prevalent in the verses underscore the longing of the prophets from ages past for the Messiah to arrive on the scene. The melancholy gives way to jubilation in the chorus as it triumphantly announces that Immanuel has come.

In some ways, the trajectory of the hymn mirrors the trajectory of our walk with God. We walk through dark, melancholy times when we long for the palpable presence of Christ, Immanuel. We long for God to truly be with us in a way we can sense. Those dark times give way to times of rejoicing as we realize that Immanuel has come, is here and will always be.

The words of the hymn date back to 12th century antiphons which were sung in monasteries beginning a week before Christmas. Originally written in Latin, the lyrics were translated into English by John M. Neale in 1851.The music, known as Veni Emmanuel, comes from a 15th century processional. Trivia buffs … Neale also penned the Christmas song, Good King Wenceslas.

O come, O come, Emmanuel,
And ransom captive Israel,
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear.

Refrain

Rejoice! Rejoice!
Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, Thou Wisdom from on high,
Who orderest all things mightily;
To us the path of knowledge show,
And teach us in her ways to go.

Refrain

O come, Thou Rod of Jesse, free
Thine own from Satan’s tyranny;
From depths of hell Thy people save,
And give them victory over the grave.

Refrain

O come, Thou Day-spring, come and cheer
Our spirits by Thine advent here;
Disperse the gloomy clouds of night,
And death’s dark shadows put to flight.

Refrain

O come, Thou Key of David, come,
And open wide our heavenly home;
Make safe the way that leads on high,
And close the path to misery.

Refrain

O come, O come, great Lord of might,
Who to Thy tribes on Sinai’s height
In ancient times once gave the law
In cloud and majesty and awe.

Refrain

O come, Thou Root of Jesse’s tree,
An ensign of Thy people be;
Before Thee rulers silent fall;
All peoples on Thy mercy call.

Refrain

O come, Desire of nations, bind
In one the hearts of all mankind;
Bid Thou our sad divisions cease,
And be Thyself our King of Peace.

Refrain

The Cyberhymnal offers this analysis of the prophetic references within the lyrics:

The title comes from the well known Isaiah 7:14: “Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.” Immanuel is Hebrew for “God with us.” The “Rod of Jesse” refers to Isaiah 11:1: “There shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse”; Jesse was the father of David, second king of Israel. “Day-Spring” comes from Zacharias, father of John the Baptist, in Luke 1:78: “The dayspring from on high has visited us.” “Thou Key of David” is in Isaiah 22:22: “The key of the house of David will I lay upon his shoulder,” which in turn refers to Isaiah 9:6 “The government shall be upon His shoulder.”

The sad death of Redskins safety Sean Taylor is all over the news today. In the days to come, we’ll be hearing more about this young man — good and bad as it seems some writers are already suggesting that his past made this present situation all but inevitable (and, trust me, the writer is being rightfully bashed in the comments on the site). As these days progress, though, it seems the ‘Skins — whatever you think of them as a team or whatever you think of Joe Gibbs as a coach — have the right man at the helm to guide the team through, as this clip from ESPN reveals. (Sorry, can’t get the embedding to work.)

Sudden song recall…

I’m trying to figure out why this song came crashing into my consciousness all of a sudden. I had forgotten it even existed, but it started running through my head when I was trying to go to sleep last night. Here we are embarking on the season of light and I have this old, dark — somewhat disturbing — song popping into my head. Anyone else remember it?

Deeper: Exodus 3:1-4

“When the Lord saw that he had gone over to look …” Exodus 3:4

I never noticed it before, but the Lord waited to say anything to Moses until Moses turned away from tending the sheep to come and see what the Lord was doing.

Often we rush past the signs that God places in our paths, refusing to turn away from the everyday cares of the world to stop and acknowledge the message that God is trying to communicate whether it be through the Scriptures, books that we read or people to whom we speak.

What if Moses had not turned away? Would the Lord have spoken? Would the Lord have tried other means to communicate? Granted, the omniscient God already knew that Moses would indeed turn to see the burning bush yet he waited to speak. Wouldn’t his actual voice have drawn Moses’ attention far more quickly?

What happens when we ignore the signs? Is it any wonder we claim to never hear the Lord speak yet we take no time to actually turn to him to listen?

On the cross …

“What landed Jesus on the cross was the preposterous idea that common, ordinary, broken, screwed-up people could be godly!”

Cool. Jollyblogger reports that the name of my favorite QB has prompted the creation of a verb.

Christianity Today has posted its list of the best albums of the year. Personally, I haven’t heard a couple of them. Relient K would never make any list I would compile. Crowder and crew should have been higher up. It was awesome to see one of my favorites of the year, Jeremy Casella’s Recovery, on the list.

Also at Christianity Today, a review of the remastered release of The Joshua Tree … aka the soundtrack of my first year in college.

And, speaking of best of the year … Amazon lists its top books of 2007 . I’m swimming pretty far from the current, apparently, since I’ve only read one book on the editor’s picks list and two from the bestsellers list.

I can’t help it. Here’s another interesting list. This one from WXPN in Philly listing the 885 Most Memorable Music Moments. It’s a list that’s probably worth a post on its own as it includes musical moments as diverse as the marriage of Courtney Love and Kurt Cobain, the death of Jeff Buckley, the various benefit efforts of the 1980s and the debut of WKRP in Cincinnati. I’ll let you find out which was more memorable in the minds of the list makers.

Finally, since this is such a music-heavy post, visit delirious and download a free mp3 of their new song, God is Smiling. I love it …

PhotoHunt: Hot

For “hot”, I chose a photo taken in July 2006 in Mississippi while on a work project to help rebuild a home destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. Yes, Mississippi in July is HOT. The feet pictured are those of my then 89-year-old grandmother who made the trip with us.

Isaiah 52:7 says, “How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who publishes peace, who brings good news of happiness, who publishes salvation, who says to Zion, ‘Your God reigns.’”

I say Grammy’s feet on the debris pile are just as beautiful.

Black Friday …

23 November 07 at 6:17 pm | In To Walk Humbly ..., youth ministry | No Comments

Even as I woke up this morning, the news had pictures of shoppers who had waited in line for hours to get some of the bargains awaiting Black Friday shoppers. At some point this afternoon when I saw even more photos, I had an idea. I don’t know if I can get anyone to go along with it for next year, but I would love to do it even though I have to work the next day.

The idea is this: the youth group gathers as many carafes and thermoses as we can find and make as much hot chocolate and coffee as we can before heading out to the store to offer the line-waiters a little refreshment at no charge. If anyone asks, we’re from a local church and just celebrating advent by giving and sharing as we have opportunity.

Yeah, I know that Thanksgiving, especially, could be a day for outreach to the down-and-out, but so many ministries are already there doing that. Who is reaching out to the Laodiceans (so to speak) in our midst who think they have it all, and are in line, perhaps, to get even more without realizing that they are missing the greatest of all gifts?
